Women Aspire Network is a Feminist Non-Governmental Organization based in Accra, Ghana. Legally registered in 2017, we are a women’s rights and development organization dedicated to one purpose: ensuring that girls and young women live, lead, and thrive without discrimination and inhibitions.
We work at the intersection of rights and development. Our work is not charity — it is justice. Through education, research, advocacy, policy influencing, and pro bono court representation for young women from underserved communities, we dismantle the barriers that hold women back.
We believe when you invest in a girl, you transform a community. When you protect a woman’s rights, you secure a nation’s future.
WHAT WE DO (5 Pillars):
- Education: Community education and feminist leadership training for girls and young women
- Research: Evidence-based research on women’s lived realities in Ghana
- Advocacy: Amplifying women’s voices from the grassroots to national policy spaces
- Policy Reform: Influencing laws and policies to be gender-responsive and just
- Pro Bono Legal Support: Free court representation for young women from underserved communities who cannot afford justice
3. VISION, MISSION, CORE VALUES
Our Vision: To create a world where Girls and Women thrive and are free to participate in national development without any discrimination and inhibitions.
Our Mission: To create a solid foundation for Girls and Young Women’s empowerment and development.
Our Core Values:
- Feminist Principles: Our approach is guided by feminist principles. We center women and girls, challenge patriarchy, and work to remove all barriers inhibiting their development.
- Community-Owned Development: We believe development must be owned by the community. We work with, not for, women and girls.
- Respect & Human Rights: We respect all individuals and uphold the inherent human rights and dignity of every girl and woman.
4. OUR PROGRAMS
Program 1: Women’s Participation in Governance and Leadership
Ghanaian women make up 51% of the population but less than 15% of parliament. This is not a gap, it is an injustice. We train, mentor, and support young women to run for office, lead community structures, and claim space in decision-making. From campus SRCs to district assemblies, we are building a pipeline of feminist leaders who will transform governance in Ghana.
Program 2: Women’s Participation in the Extractive Industry and Development
Ghana’s gold, oil, and mineral wealth is often extracted from communities where women bear the heaviest cost — displacement, environmental damage, and exclusion from benefits. We fight for women’s right to benefit, to be consulted, and to lead in natural resource governance. We equip women with knowledge of their rights, negotiation skills, and access to accountability mechanisms.
Program 3: Environment and Climate Change and Natural Resources
Climate change is not gender-neutral. When farms flood, when water becomes scarce, it is women and girls who walk farther, earn less, and drop out of school first. WAN works with women farmers, fisherfolk, and market women to build climate resilience, advocate for climate justice, and ensure women’s knowledge is at the center of Ghana’s climate response.
Program 4: Women’s Access to Justice
Justice should not be a luxury. For young women from underserved communities facing sexual violence, land dispossession, early marriage, or discrimination, the legal system is often out of reach. WAN provides free pro bono legal representation, legal literacy, and psychosocial support. We don’t just go to court — we accompany survivors until justice is done.
5. WHY WE EXIST
In Ghana, progressive laws exist, but implementation fails girls and women every day. Girls still face barriers to staying in school. Young women are denied land and inheritance. Survivors are silenced. WAN exists to close the gap between law and life.
